My Hair Journey

Everyone I know is going natural!  It’s truly starting to catch on like wild fire.  So much so, I decided to do a little research and see what all the hoopla was about.  I read several online articles regarding the effects of chemical straighteners on black hair.  I was just shocked to find out that chemical hair straighteners are linked to:

  • Increased risk of uterine fibroid tumors
  • Early onset of puberty in young girls
  • Alopecia

At first, I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do with this newly found info.  Me, go natural…NEVER!!! So I thought.  Then, I had a hiccup with my stylist.  He abruptly changed salons on me and changed his schedule.  The new schedule was not at all client friendly and I was not happy!  It’s bad enough I was paying a good $100 every two weeks and now I was going to have to squeeze into his rigid schedule.  No, thank you!  I still wasn’t sold on going natural, though.  I mean, I couldn’t be one of these girls that BC’d (big chopped).  I’m not ready for that.  I then stumbled onto the YouTube natural hair care community and what a vast community it is!  I feel in love and knew I was in the right place and this is the right time. So now, I am a transistioner.  Not sure when I will make that final push over to natural but I am enjoying the journey.  I had my last relaxer on April 30th, 2013 (my birthday) and I don’t plan on going there again!  My plan is to rock protective styles until I am ready for the final chop of relaxed hair.  I am definitely in unchartered waters but I’m loving the scenery!
